What I Eat Before I Workout

What I eat before I hit the gym has a direct impact on my ability to get results during my working. But before I talk about what to eat, let’s briefly touch on not eating at all. There are some who recommend intense aerobic exercise of 15-20 minutes first thing in the morning before eating anything (aka Fasted Cardio). In this instance, there is some evidence that your body uses stored fat as a fuel source. Sounds awesome right?! Hold on. In this process, your body may also use muscle proteins as a fuel source, which is bad news if you’re trying to keep or build healthy, toned muscles. There are some that swear by fasted cardio, but I don’t recommend it and I know it doesn’t work for me.

My body needs fuel to make it through workouts and maximize the results. I notice that if I don’t eat enough before a workout I’m sluggish, lose energy really quickly, and even feel nauseated. Eating the proper foods will not only help your muscles respond to the workout, but will prevent a drop in your blood sugar. Ultimately you have to figure out what works best for your body. Try eating different combinations or snacks and note what works better.

The goal of a pre-workout meal or snack is to give you sustained ENERGY for your workout. Generally speaking, muscle energy comes from carbohydrates. Ideally you want to choose a low-glycemic carbohydrate and a protein. Also, eat well before your workout (not right as you’recottage cheese apple walking into the gym) to give your body some time to digest.

Here are some of my favorite pre-workout snacks:
-Egg whites, half a grapefruit
-Egg/egg white omelet & sliced peppers or veggies
-Plain Greek yogurt with a banana
-Turkey burger, ½ sweet potato
-½ an apple, low-fat cottage cheese
-Small chicken breast, salad
-Ezekiel toast, plain Greek Yogurt
-Protein shake with spinach and banana

But there’s another important component to maintaining energy and that is hydration. Grabbing a water bottle to sip at the gym isn’t enough. Drink plenty of water 1-2 hours BEFORE you hit the gym, so your body is already hydrated once you get there.

Let’s review: drink plenty of water well before your workout, I definitely recommend eating before you work out, find out what works best for you to get your best workout in
